Another week, another degree show!
This weekend we visited the Royal College of Art degree show, on the lookout for up-and-coming artists on the cusp of promising careers.
For the 10th consecutive year, the Royal College of Art has been ranked the number 1 university for Art & Design in the world according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. Admissions are highly competitive and rightly so, as the university boasts an impressive lineup of alumni including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Chris Ofili, Tracey Emin…the list goes on.
The show was huge and presented works by students graduating from MA programmes in several disciplines including print, photography, ceramics & glass, contemporary art practice, curating contemporary art, jewellery & metal, writing, sculpture and painting. The painting department drew the most visitors, making it the busiest area of the entire show. It was also the strongest department with the most impressive and promising artists showcasing a wide range of styles from full abstraction to highly realistic figurative painting. With almost too much to see and a bustling crowd, it was hard to spend time with each painting, however a few artists and artworks stood out among the masses.
